Under Cabinet Lighting

Perhaps the most important area to have adequate lighting in the home is the kitchen. Not only will food preparation be easier and safer to do but the end product will look just that much more appetizing.

SME Inc of Seattle can install under cabinet lighting in your existing kitchen, work with you on a kitchen remodel or work with your architect for new builds.

SME has in house designers to make sure your project, no matter the size is properly designed to give you the lighting where you need it. Under cabinet lighting isn't just for the kitchen. We can install the same type of lighting in bookcases, china cabinets, garages, dens or in workshops. Wherever direct lighting is needed, under cabinet lighting should be a consideration.

Types of Lighting

What type of lamp you use for under cabinet lighting will depend upon what area is to be lighted, what the area is used for and the quality of light you want.

  • Halogen bulbs, are usually used for spot or direct lighting. The quality of light is a crisp, clear white light. The drawback is Halogen lights can dissipate considerable amount of heat. Lamp life is 2,000 to 6,000 hours.
  • LEDs are more energy efficient than either Halogen or incandescent lights and they have a long service life of 25,000 to 100,000 hours. The light is a high quality white light. LEDs are the most energy efficient lamps. While not as hot as halogen, LEDs can produce higher temperatures.
  • Xenon is an incandescent with xenon gas for longer life – 2,000 to 10,000 hours. The light is comparable to the warm yellowish light of an incandescent.
  • Fluorescent lights are the most energy efficient after LEDs. The light quality is either a cool bluish or warm yellowish tint. The bulb’s life is 5,000 to 20,000 hours. Under cabinet fluorescent lights cannot be dimmed.
  • Incandescent lights are the cheapest to purchase but the least energy efficient. The light casts a yellowish hue. The lamp life averages about 1,000 hours.

Types of Fixtures

Generally, fixtures come in single puck style, a linear light strip or rectangular style. Puck styles are usually used for display lighting to highlight a painting or other prized item. Strip lighting can be used above or below cabinets if the cabinets are dropped from the ceiling.

Using a combination of overhead lighting, over and under cabinet lighting and display lights, SME Inc. can help you bring light into your kitchen and make it a showcase of its own.
