SME has been recertified as an Accredited Quality Contractor by ABC

SME Inc of Seattle has been recognized by Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) as a 2018 Accredited Quality Contractor (AQC). AQC members proudly set the construction-industry standard as highly performing, ethical contractors and members of their communities. AQC status is determined by a stringent and thorough set of criteria that demonstrate commitment to five key areas of corporate responsibility: quality, safety, employee benefits, training and community relations. Annual recertification is required to ensure all participants uphold and maintain the rigorous set of AQC standards, including:

  • Quality-based industry honors and third-party recognition;
  • Maintenance of an effective company quality control program;
  • Financial stability and adequate bond status;
  • A strict safety environment, including:
    • Total Recordable Incident Rates (TRIR) at or below the industry average,
    • a robust safety training program in adherence with the company’s corporate safety manual,
    • consistent performance of pre-work job hazard analyses, and
    • participation in ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP);
  • Continued craft and management training; and
  • Highly competitive employee benefits and programs, civic involvement, and policies that foster nondiscrimination and a substance-free workplace.

AQC members are guided by the principles of free enterprise, along with other ABC members, and believe construction contracts should be awarded based on sound and credible criteria, such as those demonstrated by AQC. SME Inc of Seattle is committed to delivering its clients high quality services while providing their employees the freedom to work, grow and prosper within the parameters of a merit-based construction market.

Ryther Center for Children & Youth

SME Inc has a soft spot in our hearts for children in need. The Ryther Center for Children & Youth has been the recipient of our annual Christmas Giving Tree the past few years. Each year, the employees of SME Inc, and its subsidiaries, NW Wind & Solar, and Pacific Fire & Security, open their hearts to donate gifts for Ryther’s children. We’ve also renovated the central administration building and several of the cottages on Ryther’s 10-acre campus.

Ryther serves nearly 2,500 children, teens and young adults in Seattle, Bellevue, and Mukilteo. They provide comprehensive services and treatments for youth who face complex challenges. Through guidance, coaching, and teaching, children and families learn new ways of thinking, develop positive relationships, and realize a better life. Founded in 1885, Ryther now has over 200 professional care and support staff to carry out these important services to our community’s children.

BOMA Members Step in to Help Bellevue’s Men Shelter

This 4,000-square foot shelter serves 80 men a day, but toilet and bathing/laundry facilities were in portables onsite. A new building has been approved but it won’t be built for a few years. The CFH was in dire need of renovation and TI improvements in upwards of $450,000, and the improvements are desperately needed before the coming winter. By law the city had to go with a non-bid contract process, however, this limited the cost to $350,000. Here is where SME Inc and other BOMA members stood up and offered their help.

“MacDonald Miller is doing the ducting, venting, HVAC and other mechanical work, SME Electrical is doing the electrical work for the project and American Mechanical is doing the considerable plumbing work to construct indoor bathrooms, showers, laundry, etc. All three firms submitted pricing that lowered project costs to just under $350,000. Additionally, McKinstry lead the way and provided at no charge project scoping, drawings, permitting and much more. BOMA has also contributed some community partner reserve funds to help purchase needed equipment but we are still raising funds to help the facility purchase and install a commercial laundry set so they can wash the bedding on site.”

If your firm is able to help with a cash donation to help CFH get the much-needed onsite commercial laundry, contact BOMA at 206-622-8924.

Historic Renovation in West Seattle – Admiral Theater

SME Inc recently completed $100K electrical renovation on the historical Admiral Theater in West Seattle. We renovated the theater's electrical systems by installing new lighting in the lobby (highlighting vintage murals uncovered in restoration), theaters and concession areas and upgraded and updated the electrical systems in the projection booths.

In 1919 the Portola a vaudeville and motion picture house opened in West Seattle. In 1942 the building was remodeled by the well-known architect, B. Marcus Priteca (Coliseum, Paramount, Admiral in Seattle and Pantages in Tacoma). The Admiral has weathered neglect, disrepair, several updates and a 3-year closing. Fortunately, in 1989 this art-deco building was designated an historical landmark and gained yet another new life.

Recently, the Admiral received its latest $1.7 MM renovation, growing into a four-theater movie house with the latest in digital sound and projection.

While most of our commercial and industrial work is done in state, we occasionally work out of state. SME Inc recently won the electrical bid on a 200,000 sq. ft. glass manufacturing facility to be located on a 77-acre industrial site in Buckeye, Arizona.

Cardinal IG, a Minnesota-based company is building the $40 MM manufacturing facility to be closer to business in Southern California, while taking advantage of the business climate in Arizona. Project completion is expected first-quarter 2017.
