Washington Business Week

Washington Business Week

SME Inc of Seattle has been a sponsor of Washington Business Week since 2007, and has contributed many volunteer hours for both judging student projects and acting as a company advisor during the Construction Week Program.

Washington Business Week has been preparing high school students to successfully enter the workforce by giving them the skills, confidence and values to succeed in life, regardless of career choice. The distinguishing feature of Business Week is the Discovery Learning/Experiential approach that allows students to take control of the experience. Because the learning is hands-on and student-directed, participants are inspired by the knowledge that they are wholly responsible for their own success. Students are away from home, friends and family and must take personal responsibility. By working in small teams with people they don't know, they have the opportunity to step out of their box in a safe environment. After the week parents often call and ask what did you do to my son/daughter. In just one week, participants gain tremendous self confidence and conversation at the dinner table is transformed. While some other programs compliment the work of Business Week, but we are the only program that gives kids an intensive, in-depth and real-world experience.

In 2015, SME Inc of Seattle chose YouthCare of Seattle as our new beneficiary to the SME Annual Charity Golf Tournament. This year we've served meals, donated $10 per service call for the month of July, gathered back to school supplies during the fall and Christmas and presented a check for $10,000 (Golf Tournament proceeds). We hope that our efforts assist YouthCare's continuum of care: Enage - Homeless Youth > Stabilize - Off the Streets > Prepare - Preparing for Life.

Gateway Medical Alliance

Created to fill a need in a country that is far less fortunate than ours, Gateway Medical Alliance accepts used medical equipment – from crutches and wheelchairs to medical instruments and examination tables – to ship to the northwestern country of Morocco.

As a child of a US Air Force pilot, Michael Spiger spent two of his childhood years in this country after which his family transferred to another base, but the country never left him. As an adult and now a doctor, Michael traveled back to Morocco several times and saw the desperate need for medical equipment in this country he had adopted. In 1995, he and his wife launched what would become, Gateway Medical Alliance.

Since the first cargo container was shipped in 1997, 50 containers have arrived in Morocco filled with medical equipment for individuals, doctors and dentists offices and to be used to open facilities in rural areas. Run by a small group of volunteers in Puyallup, WA, Spiger and his band of 20 accept, sort, inventory, wrap and pack the donated equipment until 900 cartons are ready to pack a shipping container that is handled and shipped by the NGO, Medical Teams International.

Working at both ends of the shipping experience Gateway Medical Alliance has opened four children's therapy centers and in partnership with medical professionals in Morocco, organizes medical and dental campaigns for outlaying rural areas. They have also opened a wheelchair repair shop to keep their donated equipment in good working order. To date GMA has shipped over $14 million of used equipment.
